First Fish Award - Catch a Memory

Catch a memory when your favorite young angler hooks their first fish! Your child will receive a frameable certificate to commemorate this special event.

It’s easy and free to participate!

1. Take your child fishing.

2. Snap a photo of their first fish.

3. Fill out the First Fish entry form (or email the information along with a photo) and mail it in.

Taking Kids Fishing Tips

Have fun
Take pictures
Keep the trip short - a couple hours at most
Make sure there are restrooms near
Choose a spot close to home
Emphasize that fishing is fun, catching is a bonus
Plan alternate activities to do if the weather turns bad or your child/children get bored
Take plenty of breaks
Leave your fishing rod at home - it is about the kids fishing
Pick a sunny day with moderate temperatures
Morning trips are best - the fish bite beter and kids have more energy
Pack plenty of snacks and drinks

Who needs a fishing license?

All anglers 16 years and older must have a fishing license to fish Iowa waters.

Yearly, seven-day, or 24-hour licenses are available. Licenses are sold at many locations including Dahls, Hy-Vee, Kmart, Wal-Mart, the county recorder, bait and tackle
shops, banks, sporting goods stores, gas stations or online through the IDNR at: http://www.iowadnr.gov/Fishing/FishingLicensesLaws.aspx

You may also call 1-800-367-1188 to purchase a license 24 hours a day.

License fees and an excise on fishing equipment fund stocking, shoreline and fish habitat improvement, construction and repair of fish jetties, fish surveys, and angler education programs.
